ROLLIE: 2019 VICTORIAN DESIGN CHALLENGE WINNERS!

Studio Periscope are the winners in the professional category of the Victorian Design Challenge: The Waste Challenge. The Live Pitch at the NGV included many great ideas and we’re honoured to accept the award.

ABOUT ROLLIE

Our concept “Rollie” is a hot composting system for primary schools that combines education with play, to keep food waste out of landfill and transform it into a valuable resource.

Rollie is a giant hamster wheel that enables children to aerate compost in a new way, a task that is traditionally difficult and strenuous. It also encourages students and teachers to monitor and balance ingredients to achieve the ideal hot composting conditions.

Rollie uses aerobic (aerated) ‘hot’ composting, a method that is faster than anaerobic (not aerated) composting. It is also capable of breaking down more types of food waste and reduces methane gas production.

By making it easier and more enjoyable for children to get involved, Rollie helps to teach the techniques and value of composting while having a direct impact in the War on Waste.

THE THICK AND THIN OF NATURAL MATERIALS

We love working with Austral Plywoods. Not only is their material beautiful, it also uses Hoop Pine - a sustainable resource that is 100% plantation grown. However, working with plywood poses a challenge when it comes to managing thickness variations for production. The material variations are due to the natural irregularities in timber and moisture absorption in different climates. 

We believe it is the industrial designers, not the manufacturers, that are responsible for understanding and catering for possible variations during cnc routing or laser cutting.

With FromWoopWoop's T-stool we're adapting the connections to achieve a tight accurate fit in one direction allowing the material thickness to vary naturally in the other direction. Allowances for both thin and thick sheets are essential to ensure consistent and dependable production runs. Designing with these considerations requires a process of thorough testing and intelligent design thinking.
